If you’re new to owning a cat, you may be confused about her moods. Your cat’s body language will tell you a lot if you know how to read the signs.
- She is feeling territorial when her ears are perked and paws are planted firmly on the floor.
- She is ready to launch into action when her ears move forward, her hind legs bend, and her pupils dilate.
- She is calm and content when her tail is relaxed and eyes are slanted.

Yes. Crating is not mean. You are not putting your dog in “jail.” In fact, dogs feel secure in small, enclosed spaces. But make sure he has room to stand, to turn, and to lie down. Use the crate as his den for sleeping and his own safe space.

First, you need to identify why your dog is barking excessively. Your dog may be barking for a number of reasons: loneliness, separation anxiety, territorial, and more.
- Loneliness - spend more time with your dog and provide toys for his alone time. If he persists, place some pennies in a can and tape it shut. Shake the can and say "quiet" in a firm voice when he barks.
- Separation Anxiety - Train your puppy or dog to be alone. Place him in a room, say "quiet," and leave the room. When he barks, return and say "quiet" then leave again. When he has remained quiet for a brief time, return and praise him. Continue to do this while extending the time period.
- Territorial - When a dog barks for territorial reasons, he feels rewarded when the person leaves. Try engaging your neighbors, mail carrier, and others in a brief conversation with your dog present to remove the reward for his barking.
